HEADACHE AND MIGRAINE TREATMENT
Suffering from a headache or migraine? You are certainly not alone, as it is estimated that in Australia alone, there are about 7 million tension-type headache, and 4.9 million migraine sufferers.
Unfortunately, headache disorders, including migraines, are some of the most complex and most poorly understood conditions. Symptoms can involve the entire central nervous system, including (but not limited to) head, face, jaw or neck pain, pressure, nausea, vomiting, vertigo, changes to vision, hearing, smell or taste.
At Core Physiotherapy Beenleigh clinic, we are lucky to have David Appleby and Johnny Tawhara, two senior physiotherapists, with advanced training in the Watson Headache® Approach.
The Watson Headache® Approach is ‘a series of manual (non-manipulative) cervical spine techniques embedded in an innovative clinical reasoning process to address previously unrecognised patterns of musculoskeletal misbehaviour headache, migraine and associated conditions.’
David and Johnny bring years of experience in the provisional diagnosis and treatment of headache and migraine disorders that specifically stem from issues in the upper cervical spine (the top vertebrae of the neck). The top three cervical vertebrae are implicated due to their connection with the trigeminal nerve, a primary player in headache pathways.
Internationally recognised, this technique uses specific manual techniques to assess and treat the underlying cause of headaches and migraines. To do this, practitioners focus on assessing joint mobility, symptom reproduction and neurological function. The treatment is non-invasive and comprises non-manipulative (no ‘cracking’) techniques administered in a systematic way. This is a highly targeted technique that requires extensive training to perform effectively and safely.
Research has shown that by assessing and correcting the dysfunction in upper cervical spine, we can reduce head pain and associated neurological symptoms. Alongside manual therapy, patients may receive corrective exercises and posture guidance to reduce neck strain and prevent recurring pain.
