Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a holistic, non-invasive, manual therapy, that focuses on how the skeleton, joints, muscles, circulation, nerves and connective tissue’s function before diagnosis and treatment.

Viewing the body as one unit working together, Osteopaths improve your body’s health through strengthening and manipulation providing musculoskeletal and nervous system assessments, manual therapy, clinical exercise programs and movement advice.

Osteopaths use a variety of hands-on treatment techniques to help restore movement, reduce pain, and improve the way a body can function which allows healing to be optimised.

These techniques may include soft tissue (massage) work, stretching, muscle energy techniques for joint mobilisation, trigger point release and counter strain and joint manipulation where appropriate. Manipulation therapies (osteopathic techniques) are designed to increase a patient’s range of motion and maintain proper joint function for healthy joints, muscles, fascia, connective tissue, nerves and blood vessels.

When you first see our Osteopath, James Ramsay, you can expect a thorough conversation about your pain and why you are seeking treatment, including a comprehensive case history followed by a hands-on physical examination. This may involve neurological testing or Orthopaedic testing to establish a cause of pain. Once a diagnosis of your pain is found, a treatment plan to target the body’s underlying cause can be established to reduce the symptoms.

It is through a deep understanding of anatomy and physiology, and with excellent clinical skills, that our osteopath can detect and treat you. Osteopathy’s unique approach to manual therapy aims to treat the cause of the symptom rather than simply reducing it temporarily. Common musculoskeletal symptoms and conditions that can be treated by James may include:

  • Upper limb injuries or pain to shoulders and elbow
  • Back pain including sciatica, sacroiliac joint and coccyx pain
  • Mobility issues and joint paint
  • Inflammatory conditions like tendinitis and bursitis
  • Work-related and occupational injuries
  • Repetitive strain injuries and postural problems
  • Stiffness related to osteoarthritis
  • Musculoskeletal complaints related to pregnancy and post-natal patients
  • Neck and jaw pain, including whiplash, headaches and migraines
  • Hip, knee, and ankle pain, including shin splints
  • Management of arthritis

Our Osteopath can prescribe exercises or stretches to complete at home to help prevent your pain from reoccurring. If the condition may need imaging, your Osteopath can refer you for the correct image which may help in the diagnosis and treatment of your condition.
