Clinical name: Recurrent ankle sprain prevention
If you’ve sprained the same ankle more than once, the most effective way to break the pattern is a structured program targeting balance, strength and control around the joint — not just “being more careful.” Bracing or taping, better footwear choices for the surface and sport, and addressing any underlying instability are the other main levers, and combining them gives the best results.
Repeated sprains usually mean the ankle’s proprioception (its sense of position and the reflexes that react to an unstable surface) and the surrounding muscle strength haven’t fully recovered after an earlier sprain — even once the pain and swelling are long gone. This is treatable, but it needs a deliberate program rather than time alone.
A previous sprain is the single strongest predictor of another one. If rehab stops once pain settles — often within a couple of weeks — the balance and reflex control that protect the ankle on uneven ground often haven’t caught up yet, leaving it vulnerable the next time it’s tested. Some people also have an underlying instability or a naturally more mobile ankle that adds to the risk (see our article on ankle instability vs hypermobility).
The best-evidenced approach is a structured balance and strengthening program, ideally continued for several months rather than a couple of weeks — single-leg balance work, reactive/wobble-board style training, and strengthening the muscles on the outside of the lower leg (peroneals). For contact and change-of-direction sports, a brace or taping during the higher-risk period, footwear suited to the surface, and a proper warm-up routine all add further protection on top of this.

Not usually. Bracing or taping is most useful while balance and strength are being rebuilt, or for higher-risk situations like return to contact sport after a recent sprain. Most people can wean off it once a genuine strength and balance program has been completed — the brace supports the joint in the short term, but it doesn’t build the control that actually prevents the next sprain.
If sprains keep happening despite reasonable time and self-management, or the ankle feels unstable even during everyday activity, it’s worth a full assessment to check for underlying laxity, muscle weakness patterns, or foot biomechanics contributing to the pattern, and to build a program specific to what’s found.

• My ankle keeps giving way months after a sprain — what’s going on?
• I rolled my ankle inward — why does the outside hurt?
• Ankle pain above the joint after rolling it — what could it be?
Waiting it out or simply resting rarely fixes the underlying cause, and the longer symptoms are left unaddressed, the more they tend to affect strength, movement and confidence — often making recovery slower than it needed to be. A timely assessment gives you a clear diagnosis and a specific plan, so you can start actively recovering rather than hoping it settles on its own.

If you’re a Health Psychologist who finds meaning in helping people rebuild their lives after injury, this role is built for you.
Core Healthcare is looking for an experienced Health Psychologist to join our multidisciplinary Allied Health team in Brisbane. You’ll lead Adjustment to Injury Counselling (ATIC) and Psychological Return to Work (PRT) as part of a structured Chronic Pain Management Program — supporting patients navigating work-related injuries, motor vehicle accidents, or DVA-funded claims.
This isn’t a solo practice. You’ll be embedded in a genuine multidisciplinary team, working shoulder-to-shoulder with chronic pain physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, pain medicine specialists, and return-to-work rehabilitation providers to deliver holistic, evidence-based care.
Your focus will be helping patients adapt — mentally and emotionally — to persistent pain, so they can rebuild function and return to meaningful work and life.
Day to day, you’ll be:
✓Delivering ATIC therapy within a structured Pain Management Program
✓Conducting Psychological Return to Work (PRT) assessments and interventions for injured workers on worker’s compensation
✓Collaborating on case reviews, treatment planning, and outcome monitoring with your MDT colleagues
✓Providing a blend of face-to-face and telehealth consultations to an established patient caseload
✓Producing clear, timely clinical documentation — including Provider Management Plans and insurer reports — in line with worker’s compensation requirements
We want this to be a role you genuinely look forward to. Here’s what you can expect:
✓Competitive remuneration reflecting your specialist skills and experience
✓Flexible hours — 1 to 3 days per week with flexible scheduling, or full-time if preferred
✓A ready-made caseload — no cold starts, no slow build
✓Real MDT integration — a connected, experienced team that actually collaborates
✓Blended delivery — face-to-face at our Brisbane or Beenleigh clinics, plus telehealth
✓Full admin support — so you can stay focused on your clinical work
You’re a registered psychologist with a genuine passion for chronic pain and injury adjustment — someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and understands the human complexity behind every claim.
You’ll bring:
• Current AHPRA registration and valid professional indemnity insurance (Health Psychology endorsement preferred)
• At least 5 years’ experience as a psychologist
• Demonstrated experience in ATIC, particularly with chronic and complex pain presentations
• A solid understanding of the worker’s compensation system and multidisciplinary pain programs
• Interest in PRT — including functional capacity, psychosocial barriers, and goal-oriented recovery planning
• The right to live and work in Queensland
Bonus points if you’re trained in EMDR — it’s not essential, but it’s highly valued here.
