Clinical name: Youth sports injury prevention (load management and physical literacy in child and adolescent athletes)
Most injuries in young, growing athletes come down to training load outpacing what still-developing bones, growth plates and muscles can handle — often from playing one sport year-round without a break, rather than genuine, bad luck. Encouraging a broad base of movement skills across multiple sports, rather than early specialisation, and keeping an eye on total weekly training hours are two of the strongest evidence-based ways to reduce injury risk in kids and teens.
Growth plates are still-developing areas of bone that are more vulnerable to repetitive stress than mature bone, which is part of why overuse injuries look different in kids and teens (like Osgood-Schlatter disease — see our related article) than they do in adults.
Growth spurts create a temporary mismatch between how fast bones lengthen and how well muscles and tendons keep up, and growth plates are simply more vulnerable to repetitive load than fully mature bone.

Yes — sports medicine guidelines commonly suggest limiting a young athlete’s primary sport to around eight months of the year and keeping weekly training hours roughly at or below their age in years (for example, an 11-year-old training no more than about 11 hours a week). Research consistently links early specialisation in a single sport with higher injury and burnout rates.
Encouraging participation in multiple sports — sometimes called diversification or sport sampling — builds a broader base of movement skills (“physical literacy”), and is linked to lower injury rates, longer playing careers, and, perhaps counterintuitively, better long-term athletic outcomes than early single-sport focus.
Rapid increases in training volume around growth spurts, playing the same sport across multiple teams or seasons with no genuine break, and specialising in a single sport before the mid-teen years.

A genuine off-season or break from a primary sport, encouraging a second sport or varied physical activity, keeping total weekly training hours in check against age, and addressing pain early rather than “playing through it.”
Junior athlete rehabilitation is run by clinicians experienced across a wide range of junior sports, alongside concussion assessments for young athletes — see our related article on returning to sport after a concussion.

Whether you’re chasing a personal best, coming back from a niggle, or just trying to stay in the game as you get older, waiting until something becomes a full injury rarely gives the best outcome. A tailored assessment identifies exactly what’s holding your performance back or putting you at risk, and gets you started on a plan built around your sport and your goals.

If you’re a Health Psychologist who finds meaning in helping people rebuild their lives after injury, this role is built for you.
Core Healthcare is looking for an experienced Health Psychologist to join our multidisciplinary Allied Health team in Brisbane. You’ll lead Adjustment to Injury Counselling (ATIC) and Psychological Return to Work (PRT) as part of a structured Chronic Pain Management Program — supporting patients navigating work-related injuries, motor vehicle accidents, or DVA-funded claims.
This isn’t a solo practice. You’ll be embedded in a genuine multidisciplinary team, working shoulder-to-shoulder with chronic pain physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, pain medicine specialists, and return-to-work rehabilitation providers to deliver holistic, evidence-based care.
Your focus will be helping patients adapt — mentally and emotionally — to persistent pain, so they can rebuild function and return to meaningful work and life.
Day to day, you’ll be:
✓Delivering ATIC therapy within a structured Pain Management Program
✓Conducting Psychological Return to Work (PRT) assessments and interventions for injured workers on worker’s compensation
✓Collaborating on case reviews, treatment planning, and outcome monitoring with your MDT colleagues
✓Providing a blend of face-to-face and telehealth consultations to an established patient caseload
✓Producing clear, timely clinical documentation — including Provider Management Plans and insurer reports — in line with worker’s compensation requirements
We want this to be a role you genuinely look forward to. Here’s what you can expect:
✓Competitive remuneration reflecting your specialist skills and experience
✓Flexible hours — 1 to 3 days per week with flexible scheduling, or full-time if preferred
✓A ready-made caseload — no cold starts, no slow build
✓Real MDT integration — a connected, experienced team that actually collaborates
✓Blended delivery — face-to-face at our Brisbane or Beenleigh clinics, plus telehealth
✓Full admin support — so you can stay focused on your clinical work
You’re a registered psychologist with a genuine passion for chronic pain and injury adjustment — someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and understands the human complexity behind every claim.
You’ll bring:
• Current AHPRA registration and valid professional indemnity insurance (Health Psychology endorsement preferred)
• At least 5 years’ experience as a psychologist
• Demonstrated experience in ATIC, particularly with chronic and complex pain presentations
• A solid understanding of the worker’s compensation system and multidisciplinary pain programs
• Interest in PRT — including functional capacity, psychosocial barriers, and goal-oriented recovery planning
• The right to live and work in Queensland
Bonus points if you’re trained in EMDR — it’s not essential, but it’s highly valued here.
